JULIEN JAMES Auzan
alias “J.J.” \’jā’jā\
In a nutshell
I am passionate about storytelling and people’s stories, and I take immense pleasure in capturing them in words and images as honestly and accurately as possible.
Certified freelance photographer (École Nicéphore / Acadis) specializing in editorial photography, portraits, and photojournalism.
Specialist in institutional communication (CAS from the Fribourg School of Management) active in the cultural and social sectors.
A writer and editor with a bachelor’s degree in literature (B.A. from the University of Fribourg) and a master’s degree in applied education (M.A. from the University of London).
Member of the Fribourg Association of Professional and Artistic Photography ( PPAF).
A list that is merely a formality—not intended as self-praise—but which, in our world governed by “qualifications,” is meant instead to highlight my versatile nature, which has led me to bring together all these different skills and experiences under the umbrella of JAYJAY Studio.

Images: I’ve always been fascinated by cinema. Its ability to combine audio and visuals to create virtually unlimited storytelling possibilities. But even though sound, music, acting, screenwriting, and editing are all areas I’ve taken a keen interest in, it’s cinematography above all that has always impressed me the most. Pausing the image and appreciating each shot independently of the rest. It’s no wonder, then, that I turned to photography, which—having always been just a hobby—became my profession in 2016.
Before becoming a freelance photographer and communications specialist, I began my career in teaching and education, eventually becoming an adult educator and a specialist in the integration of technology into education. Today, I handle communications for theAssociation for Family Education, an organization specializing in the socio-educational field. All of these experiences have only served to strengthen my project management, communication, and writing skills, which is why I quickly developed an affinity for editorial photography, where my writing sometimes complements my visual perspective. As for my teaching expertise, I apply it to the courses and workshops I regularly lead for private clients, schools, and businesses.
Originally from Paris, with roots in Provence and Northwest England, I am now a Swiss citizen living in Fribourg. Having lived in the United States and been incredibly fortunate to travel to many countries, I quickly developed a passion for meeting people and hearing stories from here and abroad. Every person, regardless of their social and cultural background, has the potential to carry a fascinating life story within them, and I’m fortunate to be able to meet such people through my work. That’s likely where my interest in photojournalism and editorial photography began. And culture—in the broadest sense of this term, which is often narrowed down—in a more comprehensive way. That’s how I began documenting cultural events, particularly plays (I served as the official photographer for the Fribourg Drama Center for six seasons), and that’s how I came to specialize in editorial portraiture. Today, I devote most of my energy to the editorial field, institutional communications, and the nonprofit sector, dividing my time between cultural projects and editorial assignments.
All of this led me to found Maison Noctua in 2020, an artistic collective and cultural association whose administration and major projects I managed until 2026, notably the publication of the thematic magazine MOON , where I was responsible for editorial direction, coordination, fundraising, distribution, and overall management. Because books have always held a special place in my heart, this editorial experience with MOON inspired and encouraged me to launch my own nonprofit publishing house in 2024, Éditions Images et Mots, which I now run from my small studio.
Finally, because creation is at the heart of the visual arts, I let my creativity express itself in the most intimate and profound way through my project SNAPSHOTS which brings together two distinct artistic projects: THEURBBANPOETRY, where I capture urban scenes and architecture sculpted by the interplay of lines and light, and Impressions, where I transform views of nature into impressionist visual poetry. The two are paired with a few lines of free verse; to me, the images and words possess a duality that works so well together.
